(Senior) User Researcher

Our global team of 90+ designers have deep expertise in User Experience Research, Product Design and Brand Design. We are building additional capabilities in areas including industrial design, motion design, data visualization, UX writing and design operations. 

Most Product Designers and Researchers work in co-located cross-functional teams, across all our offices in Berlin, Warsaw, Cologne, Copenhagen, Sofia and São Paulo. They develop solutions for our core payments product including our bespoke hardware, as well as a suite of software tools that support merchants as they grow their business. We believe in quality, in making complex business tools simple, and in using data to anticipate merchants' needs as their business grows. 

We pride ourselves on our close collaboration, transparency, and  placing our merchant-base of over 1 million global business owners (36+ languages) at the heart of each and every decision we make. User research and continuous knowledge building of our merchant-base is the foundation for these decisions.

What you're going to do

As a (Senior) User Researcher you are joining the Acquisition Tribe, whose mission is to build resilient and scalable acquisition platforms powering a delightful experience for merchants and partners to discover, purchase and receive the right SumUp product to grow their business. As a (Senior) User Researcher, you will play a vital role in understanding the needs of our merchants, enabling user-centric decisions and influencing initiatives that get us closer to our goal. 

Specific tasks will include:

  • Conduct primary research with our customers to understand the needs, motivations, gains and pains when using our products
  • Employ a range of research methods and tools to engage with customers in the office, on the road or remotely
  • Synthesise the outputs into actionable insights used by the squads to inform the direction and roadmap of the product
  • Contribute to the knowledge base around merchant insights
  • Collaborate with other researchers, designers and teams to deepen our shared understanding of merchants from SumUp’s 31 markets across Europe and the Americas
  • Represent global merchants through workshops, presentations, and reports 

Requirements

  • You have 7+ years of user research experience
  • You have strong experience with fundamental qualitative and quantitative user research practices, and knowledge of when to employ them most effectively
  • You have deep knowledge on finding actionable insights from data analyses
  • You have knowledge of UX standards, and bring strong background in psychology, social sciences or anthropology to the practice
  • You are good at converting insights into user models or frameworks, and can lead discussions on prioritizing product and service strategies or pragmatic solutions
  • You have some experience or interest in coaching and managing other researchers, and eventually grow your career into a lead researcher
  • You have strong oral and written communication skills in English and ideally one other language relevant to our global reach
  • You have excellent stakeholder management and partner well with cross-functional teams, as well as other researchers outside of your own tribe
  • BA or MS in Psychology, Anthropology or Design with strong focus on User Research
  • Fluent in English and one additional language - German, French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. Any additional language is a bonus
