Senior Engineering Manager

As part of our vision to become a truly global IT organization, we have started to build out local, autonomous, cross-functional squads that can take an aspect of our product and perfect it from concept to execution with full autonomy. On the tech side, we work on a number of different projects that span technologies, systems, and processes. A few of the technologies we're leveraging at SumUp include Go, ReactJS, NodeJS, Kafka, AWS, Kubernetes & Docker.


In this job you will work with several small, cross-functional engineering teams on our Merchant Acquisition Platform to develop market- facing features, powering our marketing website, our online shop and partner portal as well as our global logistics fulfillment solution. We strive for end-to-end ownership in our teams and you will be working alongside the engineering teams, enable them to be successful and help our engineers to reach their full potential, reach mastery of their skills and develop new competencies to advance their personal growth.

What you’ll do

  • Help the teams to optimize their value delivery;
  • Foster engineering practices and techniques like TDD and pair programming;
  • Support development of engineers in designing and planning feature implementations;
  • Provide design feedback to enable team autonomy and a scalable and maintainable code base;
  • Develop best practices and guide cross-cutting engineering concerns;
  • Provide code review feedback, considering both style and implementation;
  • Use regular 1:1 to guide your team through their career development and best use of their personal and development skills;
  • Set expectations early with team members around their performance and behavior in a team setting;
  • Commitment to understand and improve our engineering culture by driving team strengthening activities, such as offsites, hackathons, cross team projects, and knowledge sharing sessions;

You’ll be great for this role if

  • You value and understand the importance of cross-functional team spirit vs. traditional expert-based organizations;
  • You are fluent in English and comfortable communicating with global teams;
  • You have 8+ years of professional software development experience and 4+ years working as an Engineering Manager;
  • You have CS or equivalent background and experience in software engineering;
  • You have a good understanding of fundamental design principles, data modeling, and API design;
  • You have experience with a relational database, preferably PostgreSQL;
  • You have been exposed to microservices, containers and relevant runtimes;
  • You, ideally, have experience with the following: app platforms (GO, Node.JS, Java, Ruby, etc.), browser technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, ReactJS or other client frameworks), Linux and AWS/Cloud services;
  • You have a good understanding of the software development life-cycle in Agile development;
  • You love to solve problems by nature.
