Backend Engineer (Kotlin / Java) - Merchant Bank, Engagement

As a Backend Engineer in the Merchant Bank Tribe, you’ll be part of the team building SumUp's own digital bank. You’ll be part of a local, autonomous, cross-functional team that can take an aspect of our product and perfect it from concept to execution.

Sitting within the Merchant Bank Tribe, the Engagement value stream addresses how we can build solutions to simplify financial processes for small businesses operations. You’ll help us define ways to incentivize the customer to use the product and maximize the value the customer gets out of these operations. 

What you’ll do

• Design, implement and iteratively create back-end services
• Maintain and evolve the team core services
• Participate in API design and implementation for both internal APIs and those exposed to our third-party integrators
• Help your team deliver business value by taking decisions related to the back-end and actively participate in product discussions and code reviews with other engineers
• Provide comprehensive documentation, good test coverage, and improve code quality
• Collaborate with other software developers, QA and DevOps engineers to ensure smooth deployment, continuous integration and support for the software we deliver

You’ll be great for this role if

• You have 4+ years of experience as a back-end engineer.
• You have relevant experience with JVM-based programming languages.
• You have experience with distributed and fault-tolerant systems.
• You’re familiar with Spring, Micronaut, or another web MVC framework.
• You have a passion for clean, maintainable, and testable code.
• You understand fundamental system architecture, design principles, data modeling, and API design.
• You have great verbal and written English communication skills.
