Principal Engineer - Merchant Acquisition Tribe

Our Merchant Acquisition teams develop market-facing features, powering our marketing website, our online shop and partner portal, as well as our global logistics fulfilment solution. We strive for end-to-end ownership in our cross-functional teams and have a passion for delivering quality software. You will be working alongside our cross-functional engineering teams in the Merchant Acquisition Tribe, enable them to be successful and help our engineers to reach their full potential. By providing technical coaching, establishing architectural patterns and engineering best practices you will help support our engineers to reach mastery of their technical skills and develop new competencies to advance their professional growth.

On the tech side, we work on a number of different projects that span technologies, systems, and processes. A few of the technologies we're leveraging at SumUp include Go, Ruby/RoR, React, NodeJS, PostgreSQL, AWS, Kubernetes & Docker.

As a Principal Engineer, you’ll work along-side other Principal Engineers and engineering leaders building a common platform, tools and elements to support a multi-product ecosystem. This is a unique opportunity to shape and build SumUp’s products, which are used by millions of small merchants worldwide. You will ensure that our eCommerce platform has technical and organisational scalability for the future.

What you will do:

  • Advise teams on engineering and architectural challenges. Your engineering experience will help teams identify potential pitfalls and design for scalability and maintainability.
  • Be a tie-breaker between competing solutions or teams. By delving deep into proposals and understanding context, you’ll help teams pick from competing solutions of similar merit.
  • Be a driver/sponsor of cross-squad and/or cross-tribe concerns, identifying common problems and leading the implementation of solutions and infrastructure.

You’ll be great for this role if

  • You understand the importance of cross-functional team spirit vs. traditional expert-based organisations.
  • You have a strong Computer Science foundation (with or without a formal degree) and experience in designing and building large enterprise software systems (distributed systems is a plus).
  • You are self-motivated and proactive with great English communication skills, both speaking and writing.
  • You understand fundamental design principles, data modelling and API design.
  • You have 10+ years of experience in hands-on positions, ideally in a diverse set of programming languages and environments.
  • You have experience with databases, both relational and no-sql. PostgreSQL.
