Engineering Lead - Digital Bank, Bank Value

We’re looking for an Engineering Lead to join our Banking Value Stream and drive with mastery and a lean approach.

This role sits within the Merchant Bank Tribe, who are responsible for building, growing and supporting SumUp’s new banking products. The Bank Value stream is a set of cross-functional, located in various international locations teams (squads), responsible for ensuring smooth banking operations, “ledger” and balance services, protecting customers from fraud, as well as enabling operations and other squads to resolve merchant problems faster.

What you’ll do

  • Drive hiring and onboarding of the squads including squad leadership
  • Optimise work processes and efficiency within the value stream 
  • Design and maintain clear squad responsibilities and accountability
  • Foster and improve engineering practices and techniques
  • Keep using your engineering skills by staying hands on during technical challenges alongside the engineering team
  • Drive overall value stream technology evolution and architecture, ensuring scalability, quality and SLA
  • Coach engineering managers in leading and improving their squads and professional skills
  • Partner with the value stream product lead in defining and shaping  the value stream roadmap, evolution and mission
  • Collaborate with peer engineering leads, product leads and any stakeholders inside and outside the tribe to align and optimise technology and value
  • Align, coordinate and unentangle adjacent squad dependencies 
  • Apply regular 1:1 to support your direct and step reports through their career growth, looking for opportunities where they can find new challenges
  • Engage and improve our engineering culture by driving team strengthening activities, such as offsites, hackathons, cross-team projects, and knowledge sharing sessions

You’ll be great for this role if

  • You have 10+ years of experience in software engineering and architecture.
  • Have 3 years in leading and managing multiple teams and people managers. 
  • You understand the importance of cross-functional team spirit in contrast to the  traditional expert-based organizations.
  • You have a proven track record in building and scaling high performing teams.
  • You have experience in designing organisations from scratch or through change.
  • You’re self-motivated, proactive, and have excellent problem-solving skills.
  • You understand fundamental system architecture, design principles, data modeling and API design.
  • You have great English communication skills.
