As our Director of Dispatching and Carrier Development for the DACH region, you will be on the front line bringing sennder’s vision of connectivity to life. You will be responsible for securing trucking capacity for existing and prospective sennder shipping customers, working with Sales and Operations in offices across Europe to identify and develop specific corridors to build competitive advantage while -- at the same time -- continuously developing and optimising the way both your team and sennder operates.

You will be responsible for leading all carrier-focused activities at sennder’s office in Germany. Besides the daily business of buying trucking for shippers at the best possible rates and linking regularly recurring traffic to suitable capacity, your team is responsible for sourcing and building partnerships with new carriers, actively managing these partnerships, influencing how our technology and marketplace interacts with these carriers, improving products and processes, and launching new solutions that are mutually beneficial for carriers and for sennder. 

For someone with extensive experience in forwarder / carrier relationships in the road forwarding industry today, who has both the skills and the passion to be able to take these relationships to a new level, this is an exceptional opportunity.

The role reports into the Vice President and General Manager of the DACH Region and will be based in downtown Berlin.

Your Key Challenges:

  • Effective, efficient brokerage at competitive rates and service levels: manage the sennder dispatching teams on a daily basis, ensuring that they have everything they need to be successful in the market.

  • Carrier growth and engagement: source and build real partnerships especially with small- to medium-sized carriers and dedicated fleets with a focus on creating mutual value for both carriers and sennder.

  • Enable shipper expansion and new sales: partner with Sales to identify and capture new volumes that can be transported by existing carriers as well as build capacity on specific corridors for Sales to sell in the market.

  • Build resilience to market fluctuation: insulate sennder shipping customers from market shifts as much as possible by building a resilient carrier base, including elements like fix charter trucks, etc. while finding creative ways to maximize margins and manage risk.

  • Improve how we work: engage closely with sennder business process improvement and tech teams as well as other operations groups across Europe to identify improvement opportunities, design and test possible solutions and implement new processes in order to fulfill sennder’s strategic vision.

  • Engage with the senior leaders of key carrier partners: problem-solve and negotiate with carrier partners on topics such as asset dedication, tech/GPS adoption, and performance SLAs. 

  • Develop the team: manage, mentor, and scale the diverse team of people we call “Carrier Managers”, with a target role that expands beyond that of traditional dispatching. An ability to attract, motivate and retain top talent is a must.

To Get There You Will Need:

The toolkit and mindset for sennder’s 5x growth over the next 3 years -

  • Functional Expertise: substantial road freight forwarding experience, with a detailed knowledge of how the FTL business works today and a proven capability building carrier capacity on the basis of mutually beneficial relationships. Possible backgrounds might be an Operations Manager of a terminal of a major network forwarder, or a Terminal Manager of an FTL/LTL player with a large share of 3rd party trucking.

  • 8+ years of road forwarding experience of which 5+ years of management experience

  • Customer Obsession: sennder sees both Shippers and Carriers as customers, and requires an outside-in perspective from both angles. You will need an ability to build partnerships with carriers, identify their needs, and develop solutions to help them solve their problems. 

  • Data driven, inspirational leadership: sennder’s strong tech culture demands a strong analytical and data-based approach to team leadership and performance management. As we are breaking new ground, however, this needs to be combined with a high motivational component, to ensure the team moves forward at the rate our ambitious plans require.

  • Operations excellence: you should have experience breaking down complex problems into smaller pieces, generating ideas how to address them, defining concrete solutions and projects and then driving these through to implementation. 

  • High EQ: sennder is a very dynamic and fast-growing and -developing company, so you will need to be able to collaborate with and partner with a diverse set of internal stakeholders as well as our shippers and carriers.

  • Great German and good English: as an international company, sennder works in English. In order to engage with the German market, however, you will need to be fluent in both the German language and the (forwarding industry) culture.
