Objective of the Role

Empower the data science team to build the future of science
At ResearchGate your work will help over 20 million scientists and researchers solve global challenges. Whether studying the first moments of our universe, developing innovative cancer treatments or tackling global warming, our users are making a real difference. 

Data and ML models are at the core of everything we are doing - for example when we recommend relevant content to scientists, connect them with other relevant people in their area or with other parts of the scientific ecosystem. We operate on a Petabyte scale - our research graph consists of 20mn+ users, 150+ mn publications, 1.5+ bn citations. Data and models heavily shape the experience of scientists on our platform. 

As an Engineering Manager for Data Science/ML, you will enable your team to build ML models that power a great user experience for our users and customers. You will motivate and enable your team to work on challenging data science and ML engineering problems. You will shape the vision collaboratively with other engineering and data leaders and teams. You will own the roadmap to improve the way we work with data and ML in different areas of the company. 

Most importantly, you and your team will make an impact for 20+ million scientists around the world, who themselves have an impact on 8 billion peoples’ lives via their research.

Your Role

  • Lead a team of 2-3 data scientists (who are embedded in cross-functional product teams) and a team of 1-2 data scientists and 1-2 data engineers who work on building a recommendation and search platform and related applications
  • Provide a vision to your team that set ambitious and measurable goals in line with company goals and define the strategy to reach these goals
  • Take ownership for your team’s satisfaction, motivation, and retention 
  • Guide your direct reports’ functional development by creating development opportunities, mentoring plans and by providing timely and actionable feedback
  • Create a high performance and positive work environment based on transparency, accountability, and trust
  • Closely collaborate with engineering teams to ensure our data platform and ML operations tooling supports data scientists in the best way
  • Constantly refine and improve your team's internal and collaborative processes to ensure the most efficient delivery of high value work
  • Build a high-performing diverse team by hiring and onboarding new colleagues
  • Work with Product Managers and Technical Product Managers to ensure ML is used in the best possible way to serve the product and business
  • Evangelize the organization in the area of data science and ML 

Your Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in data science or ML engineering role
  • 3+ years of experience as a people manager
  • Strong proficiency with Python and SQL
  • Strong analytical thinking 
  • Strong understanding of the statistical foundations of Machine Learning
  • Excellent communication and prioritization skills
  • Ability to translate business requirements into ML models
